Excite Girls Rock!

Excite Girls Rock! seeks to counteract the negative messaging girls receive through mentoring and innovative youth development programming built around STEAM programming and physical activity. Participants learn not only to enjoy sports and physical activity, but to strive for goals, take pride in their accomplishments and resist harmful social pressure, allowing them to grow into healthy and self-confident young women. Throughout the 8-week summer experience and the 2-12 week after school sessions, the girls make new friends, build confidence and celebrate all that makes them unique.

Drama, Science, Physical Activity, Sport and nutritional education is woven into the program to build habits that lead to a lifetime of good health. According to the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition, nearly 45% of children living in poverty are overweight or obese compared with 22% of children living in households with incomes four times the poverty level, underscoring the need to connect children from under-resourced backgrounds to meaningful fitness programs that instill healthy habits and active lifestyles. Leaders in youth development can have a profound effect on the next generation by prioritizing social and emotional support. When students feel loved, nurtured and safe—-those students are willing to take risks for learning in school, after school and at home. All adults have a role to play in developing social and emotional skills girls need for success in school and life.
